Standard

Keep your eyes affixed

to the horizon and the waves,

but don’t turn your nose up

too far to breathe deeply.

Good luck takes many forms,

some as appalling as they come.

But take it all in

with an open mind,

and you will be rewarded handsomely.

Look twice at things that seem fishy

and thrice at things that appear fruitful.

You may very well

bump into your wildest dreams —

make sure to grab on tight

and give it your all.

You may need a shower

afterward,

but you’d have some gall

if you expected otherwise.

Be concerned with what’s at hand,

and the world is a little brightened.

Opportunity doesn’t always present itself neatly.

The things most worth your while,

are often unplanned.

Golden Hour

Standard

A crackling bonfire,

devotes all of its passion

to what its given,

until it’s reduced to glowing cinders.

You can’t help but look

on those ruby embers,

and wonder if you’re playing God

by letting your cup runneth over them

before you go to bed.

You brought them into this world

and now you’re taking them out

while they still have so much light left.

Does the Sun feel guilty,

in the slightest,

for leaving you in the dark

every night?

You can’t help but ask,

“am I the smoke, or am I the ash?”

It dawns on you, then,

while waiting for the sunset

that you never see “the end.”

That you’re not spent

day-after-day,

week-after-week.

While waiting for the next “good morning”

you’re thankful that the sun,

cares enough

to give you time and space

to rest.

Life’s Lemons

Standard

Half-empty,

or half-full,

just remember to drink deeply

and you will feel refreshed

in either case.

Every drop in the bucket,

contributed

to its current state.

A smattering of shattered glass

can lead to

angry wails,

or end with

a beautiful mosaic.

Sit down and do your scales,

I guarantee you

with dedication

you will be able to play more

than “hot-cross buns”

and “Happy Birthday.”

Today is worth it,

not perfect,

because the best way

to find a beautiful view,

is to keep climbing.

When life hands you lemons,

fix yourself a drink,

and add some zest

to everything you do.
